The Great Chestnut Walk

On a chilly Sunday morning in April, Burrator Reservoir hosted the ‘The Great Chestnut Walk’ – A 5km sponsored walk to raise awareness and funds for local men’s health and cancer charity ‘The Chestnut Appeal.’

Alan ‘Paddy’ Porter, Trustee of the charity based at Plymouth’s Derriford hospital happens to be one of our clients and owns several businesses based in Stoke Village.

After losing a male family member to cancer in March of this year we were only too pleased to be involved in Alan’s fundraising efforts to help raise awareness of Prostate, Penile and Testicular cancer.

Uncle Paul lost his fight with cancer last month. As with most cancer sufferers his fight was long and painful. His passing was immensely sad for our family but we choose to focus on the positive aspects of his life as we remember him.

Barry recalls his favourite memories of Uncle Paul – “He was influential in introducing me to music as a young teenager. He encouraged my love of learning to the play the guitar. It was all about rock music back then for me and Uncle Paul had an extensive record collection and some very rare vinyl’s that I loved exploring on visits to his home”.

14/04/19 – Vicki & Barry at The Great Chestnut Walk 2019 at Burrator Resevoir

On the day of ‘The Great Chestnut Walk’ employees from The Will Centre Ltd and Flower Fayre together with their families rocked up in their winter woollies to brave the bracing weather. Adults and children alike geared up and the pace was set.

Our group spanning three generations turned up and out to walk together. Alan with daughter Emma and granddaughter Ella headed the group. Six year old Ella concentrating very hard to record our steps around the reservoir in the hope we would hit 10,000 steps shortly before completing the loop.

Nicki and Nakita walked with their parents and little Cohen (2 years old) did a great job walking alongside the grown-ups. Mumma Mandy was on hand to encourage our younger walkers with sugary lollipops for that extra burst of energy when needed.

Dulcie (2 years old) was quite happy to be transported along the route in Dad, Ben’s carrier whilst blooming Mum, Cat gently ambled alongside carrying Dulcie’s baby sister in her tummy with great support from colleagues Libby and Vicky.

Starbooks’ Barry & Vicki were accompanied by daughters, Jessica & Ruby and Jessica’s BFF Naomi.

All the children did a great job of entertaining the group during the walk. For the adults, conversations turned to the important reasons of why we were all walking and we would like to direct you towards Alan ‘Paddy’ Porter who explains a little bit about the charity ‘The Chestnut Appeal’ in the video below…

Collectively and so far £1,610.00 has been raised from the ‘The Great Chestnut Walk’ and it’s not too late to donate. Visit the giving page to donate online or contact Vicki or Barry by 21st April to make a cash donation – we will ask for your full name, address and postcode in order to add Gift Aid.

Huge thanks to everyone who has supported us with this fundraiser. Sponsorship money is now being collected following pledges made and we thank each and every one of you for digging deep and helping this fantastic charity, which will help it to continue to do what it does best by making the PSA blood test available for men over 50 years old. Early detection of potential cancer cells can make a real difference to available treatment options and survival rates for these types of male cancers.

Special thanks and big love to the Hurford family et al who in each of their own ways are coming to terms with the loss of Paul, a beloved brother and uncle.

Finally, huge thanks to Alan Porter & Nakita Houghton for all the organisation behind the scenes to make this walk happen. You’re Stars in our eyes!
